The Air Quality Crisis

Data from the National Building Research Organization (NBRO) indicate a significant deterioration of air quality across Sri Lanka. The Air Quality Index (AQI) in multiple regions has reached levels categorized as 'Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups', with PM2.5 and PM10 levels exceeding safe thresholds.

On February 3rd – 9th 2025, Trincomalee faced Unhealthy air quality levels (AQI 150–200). Other regions, including Digana, Kurunegala, Colombo, Battaramulla, Gampaha, Negombo, Ambalantota, Puttalam, and Jaffna, recorded AQI levels between 100–150, deemed Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups.

The situation poses severe health risks, particularly for children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory conditions. Prolonged exposure to air pollution increases the risk of respiratory diseases, cardiovascular issues, and can lead to long-term environmental degradation.

Air Quality Index by Region

February 3-9, 2025

50-100: Moderate
100-150: Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups
150-200: Unhealthy
200+: Very Unhealthy

Our Solution

The Paramporul Foundation proposes the Paramporul Nandhavanam Project, a large-scale, indigenous reforestation initiative designed to address the root causes of air pollution in Sri Lanka.

01

Reforestation

Transform barren lands into oxygen-rich indigenous forests to improve air quality and combat climate change.

02

Air Quality Improvement

Enhance carbon sequestration and reduce particulate matter in the atmosphere.

03

Community Engagement

Involve local communities, schools, and NGOs in tree-planting and maintenance, promoting environmental stewardship.

04

Technological Integration

Utilize AI and IoT for real-time monitoring of tree health, growth patterns, and air quality.

05

Public Health & Well-being

Create green spaces that promote physical and mental well-being, offering a natural refuge from urban pollution.

06

Educational Opportunities

Create learning zones within the forest for schools and universities to study native ecosystems and environmental science.
